Asterion

First-time visitors may be wondering about the site name. Asterion is an ancient Greek name (Ἀστερίων) meaning (literally) “Starry One” or “Holder of the Light”. Also, in Greek mythology, Asterion was a legendary king of Crete. We hope you will agree that the name and legend exemplify the ideal that photography is first and foremost a way to “capture the light” for others to enjoy.

Photography Now and Then

During the time in which the images were taken, photography has changed significantly in use of technology, moving from film and chemical processes to digital capture and electronic processing. Despite this change, film photography seems to be enjoying a return to favor in some quarters, with some photographers working in both mediums. The example images on this page illustrate this duality.

In the same vein, photo publications have proliferated in order to keep pace with on-line outlets serving photography and photographers. The old standards (in the USA) have changed to on-line sites, and new publications now more narrowly aim at specific photographic disciplines. In line with the changes, we have found a few on-line sources, two of which are shown below, that have supplanted general printed media and now provide many of the same services to photographers.
